The Doctrine of God: Understanding His Attributes

Module 4: God's Incommunicable Attributes (Part 2)

Delve deeper into who God is by exploring His knowledge, power, and presence.

Introduction

In Module 3, we began our study of God's incommunicable attributes, those qualities that belong to God alone and are not shared with humanity. We learned about His independence, immutability, and eternity. In this module, we will continue our theological blueprint by examining three more profound attributes: His omniscience, omnipotence, and omnipresence. Understanding these truths about our Creator is foundational to building a firm and resilient faith.

God's Omniscience (All-Knowing)

Omniscience means "all-knowing." This attribute teaches us that God perfectly knows all things—past, present, and future, actual and possible. His knowledge is not acquired through observation or learning, as ours is. It is an inherent part of His divine nature. He knows the thoughts and intentions of every heart, the number of hairs on every head, and the path of every sparrow.

Key Biblical Verses:

  • Psalm 139:1-6: "You have searched me, Lord, and you know me. You know when I sit and when I rise; you perceive my thoughts from afar... Before a word is on my tongue you, Lord, know it completely."
  • 1 John 3:20: "For whenever our heart condemns us, God is greater than our heart, and he knows everything."
  • Hebrews 4:13: "Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account."

Implications: Knowing that God is omniscient provides great comfort in our times of struggle, as we know He understands our every thought and fear. It also serves as a solemn reminder that we cannot hide our sins from Him, encouraging a life of integrity and humility before Him.

God's Omnipotence (All-Powerful)

Omnipotence means "all-powerful." This is the attribute by which God is able to do all that He wills to do. It is important to note that omnipotence does not mean God can do anything, even that which is illogical or contrary to His nature (e.g., He cannot lie or cease to exist). Rather, it means that no external force can prevent Him from accomplishing His perfect will and promises.

Key Biblical Verses:

  • Jeremiah 32:17: "Ah, Sovereign Lord, you have made the heavens and the earth by your great power and outstretched arm. Nothing is too hard for you."
  • Matthew 19:26: "With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible."
  • Revelation 19:6: "Hallelujah! For the Lord our God the Almighty reigns."

Implications: The omnipotence of God gives us confidence that He is sovereign over all circumstances. We can trust that His promises are backed by limitless power and that He is able to bring about His kingdom purposes, even when they seem impossible to us.

God's Omnipresence (Present Everywhere)

Omnipresence means God is "present everywhere." This does not mean that God's being is stretched out through the universe like a gas, but rather that He is fully and completely present at every point in space and time. No place exists where God is not. This is a personal presence, not merely an impersonal force.

Key Biblical Verses:

  • Psalm 139:7-12: "Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence? If I go up to the heavens, you are there; if I make my bed in the depths, you are there."
  • Proverbs 15:3: "The eyes of the Lord are everywhere, keeping watch on the wicked and the good."
  • Acts 17:28: "'For in him we live and move and have our being.'"

Implications: God's omnipresence provides assurance that we are never alone. He is with us in our moments of joy and our deepest sorrows. It also means that there is no place to hide from His scrutiny, which is a powerful deterrent against sin and a motivation to live righteously.

Conclusion

The omniscience, omnipotence, and omnipresence of God are majestic and awe-inspiring truths. They remind us that we serve a God who is all-knowing, all-powerful, and always present. As we build our faith on this firm theological foundation, we can live with greater assurance and trust, knowing that our "God is greater than our hearts, and He knows everything."
