Scripture reminds us of a greater reality
Before knowing the Ekklesia, it's easy to think of church as a place we go, a building we enter, or a service we attend. But Scripture reminds us of a greater reality; the church is not contained by brick, mortar, or steel. The Ekklesia are the living stones (1 Peter 2:5), designed to rise together as God's temple, and temples were never built to be lifeless monuments. They were meant to host God's presence and send forth His glory.
The mission of God isn't waiting for us at the next program or event, but in the everyday spaces where we live, work, and walk. The Holy Spirit is already whispering: "Go beyond the walls."
Appetizer Thought 🍇
The Ekklesia we should know by now is a living, breathing movement. When we see ourselves as God's temple on the move, ordinary moments transform into sacred opportunities. A conversation with a neighbor, an act of kindness at work, or even the patience we show in traffic can all become echoes of His presence, flowing beyond the sanctuary into the streets.
✨ Scripture Spark: "I Am Sending You."
Few verses capture the heart of Christian mission as concisely and powerfully as John 20:21:
"Again Jesus said, 'Peace be with you! As the Father has sent me, I am sending you.'"(John 20:21, NIV)
This declaration is both comforting and commissioning. It is spoken by the resurrected Christ to His disciples, breathing peace into their fear-filled hearts and simultaneously thrusting them into the world with divine purpose. To understand this verse is to grasp something of the very heartbeat of God: a sending God, revealed in a sent Son, who now sends His people to carry on His work.
Jesus does not call us to settle within safe spaces. He sends us as carriers of His mission, temples on the move, filled with His Spirit, embodying His love.
🧱 Reflection Prompts:
In John 20:21, Jesus breathes peace into His disciples and then sends them into the world with His mission. These prompts invite you to be assured in His peace, remember you are sent, and reflect on how the Spirit empowers you to live as His witness in daily life.
- Peace Before Purpose
- Why do you think Jesus begins with “Peace be with you” before giving His mission?
- In what areas of your life do you need to receive Christ’s peace so that you can serve Him more freely?
- Sent Like Jesus
- What stands out to you about the way Jesus was sent by the Father (incarnational, humble, full of grace and truth, redemptive)?
- Which of these qualities do you sense God is calling you to reflect more deeply in your own life?
- Personal Mission Field
- Where has God already placed you (your family, workplace, community) as a field for living out His mission?
- How might you begin to see your daily routines as opportunities to embody Christ's presence?
- Spirit-Empowered Sending
- Jesus not only sent His disciples but also breathed the Spirit into them (v. 22). What does that tell you about the connection between mission and the Holy Spirit?
- Where do you need to depend less on your own strength and more on the Spirit's power?
- Living as a Sent One
- How does knowing you are sent by Jesus shape your identity as a follower of Christ?
- What is one concrete step you can take this week to live with "sentness" in your relationships, conversations, or acts of service?
Write down your thoughts, prayers, or even a simple sketch of where you sense God is sending you. Remember: the Master Engineer wastes nothing. Every stone, including you, is chosen with purpose.
